July 19 – Bus, Train, Funicular and More
Today, we decided to stick around the Interlaken area and explore more of the mountain villages. Instead of take the car to a higher elevation, we figured it was best to make use of some free bus transportation and then get on a train to bring is up to the village of Lauterburren to be our starting point for the day.
From here, we hoped a cable car and another train to make our way up to Mürren. Continuing farther up we arrived at a place called Allmendhubel. Just as we got out from this funicular car, the rain started so we took a short walk around to see the different alpine flower beds then it was another ride back down to Mürren to explore this area as well. There is another cable car up to the Schilthorn Peak (where some James Bond was filmed) but we decided that due to the high cost it would not be in the cards for us today. Mürren is a beautiful little village. We purchased cheese from a vending machine, grabbed some food from the local Coop and then made a quick meal before heading back to Lauterbrunnen.
Lauterbrunnen is famous for the number of waterfalls in the area. I think I read it was 72. We definitely did not see that many but the ones we did see were amazing to watch. After walking all the way down to nearly the end of the trail (5 km), we saw that the Trimmelbach falls were close so decided that would be a good area to explore.
Trimmelbach is a waterfall area that is reached via an underground funicular and the many many stairs and walkways up. There were 10 waterfalls in total and each one was amazing. The shear power they demonstrate was very impressive. A couple things we noticed about eurpopean people…1. They will smoke anywheres 2. They do not move out of your way when you are walking. Could be a whole group of people and they will still expect you to crawl up a wall to get out of your way.
Not feeling like walking back to the train station, we hopped on a very crowded bus back to the station, grabbed our train tickets and headed back to Interlaken. Quick burger dinner then it was a bus back to the campground for the night.
Tomorrow will be more of the same but will explore Grindelwald instead and may even include some ziplines!
Total steps today….25,803….The highest day of the trip I think!
