July 9 – Castle, Coaster & Clocks

Writing this a second time as for some reason it decided not to publish it the first time so here it goes again 🙂

Started off slowly today, I think there is something about being in an apartment vs a hotel room that slows the pace down a bit. It is nice to be able to prepare a meal and slowly get ready for the day. This AirBNB is absolutely fabulous. Any time there is enough beds for all 4 of us it is a bonus.

After we left the apartment today we headed for another castle near Lahr, Burgruine Hohengeroldseck castle ruins. When Patrick lived here in the 80’s you could drive up to the parking lot and have a short quick hike to explore the ruins. Nope not anymore. Now the road up is only available for locals and people who are eating at the local restaurants. We were neither of those (didn’t even know the restaurants were available up there) so we ended up doing it the hard way….straight up the side of the hill. As you can see in some of the pictures, the elevation was quite the change and it changed quite quickly. The trail up was quite twisty and turning with lots of information to stop and read and games for kids (and us) to play. Crawling around old ruins has quickly become a favourite thing for us to do.

Heading to deeper into the Black Forest area, we went to The House of 1000 Clocks but on the way up we spotted an Alpine Coaster. One quick u-turn later we were headed back that way to try it out. Between the four of us we managed to go between 20 – 30+km/h down the hill….but I will not say who did what 🙂

At the House of 1000 Clocks, they had all kinds of clocks. From traditional to modern and more. We could have happily spent more time in there than we did looking at them all. Even had a 15,000Euro grandfather clock size!

From here we headed a bit farther out and ended up in Triberg. Patrick remembered a waterfall here but once we realized we had to pay for it we decided not to but the area was beautiful. Very much a traditional German small town. Lots of cute shops and another clock shop 🙂

Total steps today 12,437. Tomorrow we are going to look at another castle, head to Frieberg and hopefully have Patrick’s phone back.
